Mariama sitting on a cushionThe Erase Foundation is a registerd charity in Britain and Gambia. They are a group of volunteers (no one gets paid) who are empowering disadvantaged communities in Gambia. Fundraising proceeds go straight towards the construction of a community centre in Marakissa and to provide equipment to schools and community projects in Gambia. The centre will be a multi functional building to provide daycare, adult education, vocational courses and healthcare advice. This will be open in 2010. http://erasefoundation.org.uk/

Gambian doll face and hairMariama is made from beautiful patterned cotton fabric from the Gambia. Her dress is a sheer gold lace fabric lined with yellow silk. A metallic ribbon is used for the trim.

Fair trade peruvian mohair wool is made into the softest dreadlocks which are rolled at the front with a gold braid.

Clay over cloth technique is used for her face and hands which is hand sculpted and hand painted. Pearly yellow buttons are used for the button joints at the shoulder and hip, sewn at the elbows and knees to allow for different poses.
