Meet Abiyatou,
Or Abi to her friends, she is such a ray of sunshine. The amazing patterns and colours in her clothing and limbs are from fabric from Gambia.
A sheer cotton shawl shades her from the sun.
Her Gambian wraparound skirt is tied with a gold sash.
A bright yellow soft cotton blouse matches her underskirt.
There is so much detail to Abi, especially her hairstyle, which is rolled,twisted and beaded with tiny black and gold beads.
Button jointed at the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees using blue pearly shell and wood buttons.
She is extremely needle-sculpted including bendable fingers.
Her face and body are sewn from a dark brown soft brushed cotton with her face needle-sculpted and hand embroidered.
She stands 17 inches tall and comes in her special decorative box.
Suitable to be handled gently by children over 11years. This doll contains 12 buttons at the joints and small beads which could be a choking hazard in small children. The hands contain pipe cleaners which could be a danger to young children.
The Erase Foundation
A donation of £5.00 GBP from the sale of this doll will be given to The Erase Foundation which is a registerd charity in Britain and Gambia. They are a group of volunteers (no one gets paid) who are empowering disadvantaged communities in Gambia. Fundraising proceeds go straight towards the construction of a community centre in Marakissa and to provide equipment to schools and community projects in Gambia. The centre will be a multi functional building to provide daycare, adult education, vocational courses and healthcare advice. This will be open in 2010.
The £5.00 donation from the sale of this doll will buy a 50 kilo bag of cement or 100 building blocks or 5 kilo box of nails.
