FACELESS DOLLS

Faceless dolls

Happy Mothers Day,

I hope all mothers are having a lazy day today. Thinking of my mum today, I remembered when she helped me with a project at school, it was a two dimentional doll and you had to sew around the pattern, well I lost the pattern but she found another for me which was a really lovely hobby horse doll pattern, circa 1973 . Of course I had no idea how to make this, so my mum stayed up all night sewing it.

It was so gorgeous with mohair wool for hair. bloomers and a petticoat, only thing was, it had no face, it was blank. As a single mother with six girls to look after its a wonder she found the time to make me this doll, let alone give her a face. This doll remained faceless for the rest of its life.

Recently I read about the Waldorf schools and how they do not have faces on their dolls as this stretches the childs imagination when playing, this makes sense. There's also Amish people who have a tradition of giving their children faceless dolls and the  Native American Indian story of the cornhusk doll.
